Produced by Audio Productions of Nairobi, the company behind APL, Sound of Music and other labels, this is the main label for Jimmy Moni Mambo’s Orch Shika Shika of the late 1970s-early 1980s.
To read their history, go to www.muzikifan.com/shika.html which has a detailed account of Congolese bands in Kenya.
The label-hopping Orch Shika Shika also cut records for Bolingo, CBS, City Boom, Editions Jaca, Editions Musique Bénie, Makossa, Safari and Musiciana among others. See Bands Index for an up-to-date list.
Orch Viva Makale also released records on ASL.
Danish musicologist Flemming Harrev sent in details of HP 025, which suggests even more Shika-Shika tunes await rediscovery. In October 2013 Fredrik Lavik turned up HP 026. The song is written by Jimmy Monimambo who presumably had a good reason for releasing it as being by Orch Lemba Lemba.
HIT PARADE
In April 2011 two records appeared on Ebay which broaden the label’s scope. Parade 101 is by a Kikuyu band that also recorded for Boxer and Kikuyu Sounds, while HP 103 is by a Congolese band that also recorded for Editions Bakoka.
Update: In October 2013 Flemming Harrev sent me details of an Audio Productions catalogue, dated December 1982, that he located in the archives of Stern’s in London. It has filled in many of the gaps in this listing. The catalogue lists Parade 101 (see above) as HP 101 and I have amended the list accordingly. Apart from the Nyeri Honey Boys, all other bands in the 100 series sing in Lingala.
