DO Misiani’s prolific Luo benga band recorded for dozens of labels during their long career. Check the Bands Index for an up-to-date list of these labels.

This song, whose title roughly translates as God Bless Kenya, is one of a number of pro-government songs that Misiani released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

According to Adams Oloo’s article, Songs and Politics: The Case of D Owino Misiani, (in Songs and Politics in Eastern Africa, edited by Kimani Njogu and Herve Maupeu), Misiani was being increasingly harassed for singing songs critical of powerful political figures including then president Daniel arap Moi. By releasing patriotic songs such as Mungu Bariki Kenya he sought to get the authorities off his back. It wasn’t long, though, before he returned to commenting on the foibles of politicians.
