MAMBO
MV 7-96 is by Dan Mugula, one of Uganda’s most durable stars. Thanks to Michiel von Oosterhout for supplying details for it. Another record by the same artist, MV 7-116, turned up on Ebay in October 2009.
Most of the remaining singles are from the Voice of America collection. Of these, 7-106 is in Dholuo and is by Omolo Koobumba, who receives songwriting credits on the first two singles on the Hundhwe label by Urutu.
All the rest of Mambo’s output as recorded so far is in Kipsigis. I can’t tell you anything about the bands or their music, but the existence of these records indicates a lively if little-known local music scene.
Doug Paterson has contributed details of MV 7-344, which indicates that the label was distributed by AP Chandarana of Kericho, a fact confirmed by MV 7-116. Thanks to Rainer Windisch of Konzeptlos in Switzerland for supplying details of MV 7-191, coincidentally the 3,000th single on this website.
